A fast-moving grass fire scorched roughly 35 acres of timberland near the 900 block of 44th Street SE in Cedar Rapids on Monday evening.
Firefighters arrived after 5:00 p.m. to confront intense flames and dense smoke, strategically protecting nearby homes while ensuring no evacuations were necessary.
By 9:00 p.m., the blaze was contained, though crews continued working to douse lingering hotspots.
The cause is still under investigation.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department coordinated with the Linn County Sheriff's Office and responders from Ely, Solon, Martelle, Mount Vernon, Swisher, Springville, Fairfax, and Lisbon, showcasing rapid collaboration.
Strong winds and dry conditions have recently increased wildfire threat in the area, prompting officials to urge residents to use extreme caution with open burning.
The quick, united response highlighted local readiness, as authorities continue to monitor for any new fire risks.
